Stop Night Shoulder Pain With This Bedtime Fix That Actually Works
If shoulder pain wakes you up at night, this blog is for you. You don’t need surgery, endless physical therapy sessions, or a medicine cabinet full of painkillers to finally get a good night’s sleep.
Most people never address the root cause: the compressed nerve bundle and stiff first rib that light up like a Christmas tree when you lie on your side. Instead, they stack pillows, flip sides all night, and wake up feeling like they’ve been in a wrestling match.
With just one simple exercise using a belt or dog leash, you can decompress these critical areas and feel immediate relief—tonight.
Quick Reference
- Total Time: 5 Minutes.
- Targets: The first rib, nerve bundle, upper trap, and neck.
- Goals: Nerve decompression, first rib mobility, immediate pain relief
Exercise: Belt First Rib Mobilization

Purpose: Decompress the nerve bundle and mobilize the first rib for immediate relief.
Equipment Needed: Belt, dog leash, or strap
How to Do It:
- Sit on the edge of your bed and loop the belt over your painful shoulder across the upper trap.
- Grab the belt with both hands, gently pulling down to create firm but comfortable pressure on top of the shoulder (right where the first rib and nerve bundle live)
- Look down and in toward your armpit on the targeted side, then look up and away diagonally.
- Move slowly between these two positions (maintain a steady pressure from the belt).
Sets: 2 sets of 15 slow reps on both sides
Tip: The downward belt pressure mobilizes the first rib while the neck movement creates nerve slack. You’re getting the nerves to slide and the rib to move instead of just stretching muscles that keep going back into protection mode.
Real Results: From “No Position of Comfort” to Pain-Free Sleep
One client said this – “I could basically not lie on my left shoulder. I couldn’t find a comfortable position to get a decent night’s sleep. You gave me the exercise where I use a dog strap over the top of my shoulder, and I was like, that’s crazy how that could happen just that quick.”
This client struggled for years to sleep on that shoulder. Using this exact belt technique along with addressing his complete “Big 5” system, he finally got back to sleeping pain-free throughout the night.
Take Action Tonight
Don’t spend another night tossing and turning. This simple 5-minute routine can be the difference between another sleepless night and finally waking up refreshed. The exercise works for many people, but those who are consistent with it see lasting results. For a complete shoulder recovery system that addresses all five critical areas, consider working with a specialist who understands the interconnected nature of shoulder pain.
