How She Overcame Left Shoulder Pain And Got Back To The Gym

By Published On: September 7, 2026

She’s an active CrossFit athlete and a quilter. For months, she woke up in pain and struggled to sleep. Her left shoulder and arm ached from the top of her shoulder down into her forearm. Simple things like moving a pot on the stove or lifting her arm to the side set off the pain. She kept training, but she knew something had to change.

“I have to be able to sleep well. If you can’t sleep well, everything is affected.”

Before she started

Her shoulder began to flare after holding her arm out for long stretches while quilting a baby blanket. Soon, nearly any position hurt. Nights were the worst. She tried emergency care and local physical therapy for shoulder pain, which helped a bit in the moment, but she could tell it wouldn’t be a quick fix.

When she saw that her symptoms might be coming from her neck or back—and she already knew her back was tight—she decided to commit to a longer-term plan instead of chasing short-term relief.

What finally worked?

She started a virtual, coach-guided program. The app was simple and had clear videos for each movement which ensured easy progress tracking, and weekly check-ins. She could do sessions at home or at the gym, whenever her day allowed.

Right away, targeted neck work made a difference.

“I started immediately with the neck exercises… my sleep improved almost immediately.” Pairing a better pillow with those exercises quickly calmed the nerve pain. This early win made it easier for her to stay consistent.

Once the pain settled, she shifted toward building strength so she wouldn’t end up back in the same place. She still trained at the gym—just smarter. “You’ve got to do the work… that bar isn’t going to jerk itself.”

Life now

She moves better and feels stronger. Around the house, she can carry full pots and pans without worrying she’ll drop them. Lifting her arm to the side—once a guaranteed trigger—is no longer a problem. The elbow weakness she noticed before is gone. And at the gym, she even hit a new PR, her first since starting the process.

“I can do things that I couldn’t do before because there’s no pain or much, much less pain.”

Results

  • Nerve pain in her arm is gone
  • Sleep improved almost immediately
  • Full return to CrossFit with a new personal record
  • Daily tasks (like moving pots and pans) feel strong and pain-free
  • Lateral arm movement no longer triggers pain

Her advice to anyone with shoulder and neck symptoms

“Take care of it. Don’t suffer. Nobody’s going to give you a medal for suffering.” Address the real drivers—neck, back, sleep position—and be consistent. Your exact cause might differ, but with the right plan and feedback, you can get past it.
