How a 48-Year-Old CrossFit Athlete Got Back on the Rings After Months of Shoulder Pain

By Published On: October 21, 2026

Josna spends more time upside down than most people half her age. She was a gymnast as a kid and has been doing CrossFit for about four years, which means kipping, muscle-ups, chest-to-bars, and handstand pull-ups are all part of a normal week. She’s competitive, but she’s also smart about it. She usually leaves around 5% in the tank because, at 48, she knows she has to be careful with her joints.

So when pain set in at the front of her shoulder, it didn’t stay in the gym. Ironing, mopping the floors, and even cutting vegetables set it off. The worst part was that the pain kept her awake at night. In training, overhead positions in gymnastics and weightlifting had become painful.

The breaking point came during a set of ring muscle-ups, and the first rep bothered her shoulder. This was followed by the harder second. The third brought a sharp pain in her shoulder that made her jump straight down. That’s when she told herself she couldn’t keep pushing through training and acting like nothing was wrong. It was only getting worse.

Laser Treatment Helped But…

She’d already tried a physiotherapist. The laser treatment helped for a moment, but the pain came right back once she started working out again. Rest didn’t help either. She also tried band exercises she found on YouTube, but with no structure, one day was better, and the next was worse. She knew rest and mobility work might be enough for someone who only uses their shoulders for everyday life. Josna wanted to compete again.

The Turning Point

She found us on Instagram. Since she has some medical knowledge, she appreciated the anatomical pictures, the explanations of what each muscle does, and the message about avoiding surgery whenever possible. Then she spoke with Billy, who understood CrossFit and had worked with gymnasts before. That told her he knew what he was talking about.

She still had doubts. Her biggest fear was getting stuck doing easy shoulder work and never making it back to the rings. She told her coach, Justin, exactly that. He explained why they were calming things down first, and then he added harder, sport-specific exercises as she became ready for them. “I love that,” she said.

Her CrossFit shoulder pain recovery followed a clear progression. She started with mobility and stretching and finished with strength, and she could feel the work getting better from week to week. Also, she sent videos of her exercises and her regular training so Justin could tell her when to slow down and when she could add load. When she wanted to try swimming, he didn’t tell her to stop. He told her to start with 5 minutes, then 10, then 15, and to watch how the shoulder responded.

Results

  • Sleep was pain-free within one to two weeks
  • Muscle-ups and butterfly chest-to-bars are completely pain-free again
  • She can now do more sets, including 20 pain-free muscle-ups in a single session
  • Both shoulder blades now move together during pull-ups, where one used to rise faster than the other
  • Gymnastics movements feel easier, and her upper back is stronger for weightlifting

What Changed And Why It Worked?

Josna had tried physical therapy for shoulder pain before, but this time the plan was built around her sport. Her coach understood movements like chest-to-bars and handstand pull-ups, and he never told her to rest. She also did unilateral pulling and plenty of rotational work, which strengthened her upper back, something she’d rarely trained in CrossFit. Regular check-ins kept her from doing too much too soon.

Here’s What She’d Tell Someone in Her Position

Her “aha” moment came when she retried chest-to-bars and felt no pain. Real shoulder pain relief came when she finished her muscle-up sets completely pain-free. That’s when she knew this was the right path.

Her advice for anyone in the middle of their own CrossFit shoulder pain recovery is simple. If you want to keep training for years and handle more volume in the future, you need to keep your shoulders strong and safe.
