How a 12‑Week Online Program Helped This Client Beat Chronic Shoulder Pain
This client had two shoulder reconstructions—one on each side. While both surgeries were called “successful,” his right shoulder never felt right. It got stiff and stayed that way. For two to three years, he cycled through flare-ups—especially with bench pressing—then rest and anti-inflammatories, only to end up back where he started. He finally reached out for help when something as simple as putting on a seat belt hurt in both directions. That was the moment he decided this couldn’t go on.
Choosing an Online Approach
He lives in Australia and works with a remote team. He wasn’t worried about doing it online—he’s used to working online—but he did wonder how well they could really see his movement and guide him. Early on, he was taken through simple mobility screens on video. The coach explained what they saw and how it related to his shoulder mechanics. That gave him confidence in the process.
He filmed exercises on his iPhone and sent them in regularly and it only added about five minutes to his routine. Without those videos, he said, it would be easy to go down the wrong path and wonder why he wasn’t progressing. The feedback loop was smooth, the calls were seamless, and he felt supported the whole way.
What the Program Looked Like
The plan was holistic and methodical. It also addressed his neck, thoracic spine, and scapular control. The start was intentionally slow, which he admits he needed. Rather than rushing back to bench press, he built a base first.
From there, the progression made sense. He started with simple holds, refine mechanics, then gradually add load and more complex movements. The final phase focused on movement variability across different angles, speeds, and real-life demands. By week 11, he was doing banded perturbations, an exercise he once thought would be impossible.
As he put it, the approach “hung together.”
Results & Impact
He noticed real change across the board within 12 weeks.
- Pain: The stabbing pain with sudden movements is gone. He no longer finds any movement “problematic,” including quick reaches that used to set off sharp pain.
- Sleep: He can sleep on his side without waking up or wincing when he rolls over. For him, that was the big one.
- Daily life: Putting on a seat belt is no longer an issue. Every day tasks feel natural again.
- He advanced from simple holds to banded perturbations by week 11 and returned to weightlifting without the old limitations.
- Regular video feedback made remote care feel precise and personal (He knew what to work on each week and why).
In his words: “There’s no movement that is problematic anymore. I went from getting a stab of pain if I had to quickly move my right arm, to banded perturbations by week 11. When I first saw that exercise, I thought, ‘You’re kidding, aren’t you?’ But it was fine.”
And about sleep: “Sleep, lying on your side… that’s the big one. If you’re not getting restful sleep and you’re waking up in pain and wincing when you roll over, that’s really important.”
His Advice to Others
“Make the time in your day to do it and commit to it fully, and you’ll feel much better in 12 weeks.” This client’s story shows that with a clear plan, steady coaching, and consistent feedback, even online, he could move from chronic shoulder pain to confident, pain-free movement.
