This Lifter Stopped Chasing Online Fixes and Took Control of His Shoulder

By Published On: October 20, 2026

He’s not the type who does well with rest. When something hurts, his first instinct is to find a fix and keep training. So when a stubborn ache settled into the back of his shoulder, he did what most lifters do these days. He searched YouTube, scrolled Instagram, and even asked ChatGPT for answers.

When Pain Holds You Back

The pain showed up with almost any pressing movement. Bench press bothered him, and overhead press was, in his words, “pretty nasty.” Getting the weight through the middle of the lift put a lot of stress on the back of his shoulder, right around the area under his triceps. It happened often, and it was holding him back in the gym.

He thought he’d solved it every time he found a new stretch or exercise for shoulder pain online. But then it came back and he’d try to fix it again, and it would return again. Eventually, he hit a breaking point. “I can’t deal with this anymore,” he said. Something had to change.

He had never seen a PT or a gym coach for it. ChatGPT gave him some fairly decent cues, but it couldn’t do what he really needed: take one exercise that worked and build on it, step by step, to the next level.

The Turning Point

He worried he’d spent decent money on a pre-written routine he could have found online. The first week, which was simple on purpose, didn’t ease that worry right away. He wanted to do more.

Whenever he had a pain point midweek, couldn’t feel an exercise working, or needed a cue, his plan was adjusted. That first week had a real job – we calmed the shoulder down and laid the foundation so harder work could come later.

Having a real coach also kept him honest and he was in the app every day. If he skipped a workout, he knew he’d have to explain it to someone. Those small pressures, along with the money he’d invested, kept him on target. The app itself made things easy, too. The videos loaded quickly; he could pause and rewind, and the chat feature let him ask questions whenever he needed.

Results

  • Built a strong mind-muscle connection in his shoulder and upper back
  • Learned to control his shoulder blade and keep his shoulder in a better position
  • Can lift his kid overhead while setting his shoulder properly
  • Can now flex and engage back muscles he couldn’t activate before
  • Stayed consistent through the full 12-week program

Why It Worked

The biggest surprise for him was realizing he’d been lifting the wrong way most of his life. His shoulder tended to sit forward, almost out of its socket, so he was stressing the wrong muscles at the wrong time.

The early building weeks used lighter, simpler exercises so he could focus on squeezing muscles he had never really used. As the 12 weeks went on, A and B days and changing weekly plans brought plenty of variety. He saw some classic shoulder moves, but also exercises he had never come across. That mix of steady effort and fresh challenges taught him which muscle does what, especially the ones that pull his shoulder blade down and back.

Here’s What He’d Tell Someone Dealing With the Same Pain

His advice is simple: get it assessed by a professional. You can troubleshoot some things on your own, he said, but long-term, lingering shoulder pain needs someone else’s perspective and guidance. For him, guided physical therapy for shoulder pain did what endless online searches never could. Instead of guessing and hoping, he now knows how to position his shoulder before he lifts, whether that’s a barbell or his kid.
