This Occupational Therapist Rebuilt Her Shoulder After a Fall Without Surgery

By Published On: October 20, 2026

She has spent her career teaching other people how to work around injuries. As an occupational therapist who has worked for herself for most of her career and leads a weightlifting class for retirees, she knows every trick for adapting to limited mobility. So when a fall left her with a weak, stiff shoulder, she did what came naturally: she kept moving and figured she could manage it on her own.

Small But Mighty

At first, the problem seemed small. She had some weakness and a bit less range than on her other side. But whenever she took a week off from teaching, the shoulder got worse. Over the months, the pain and discomfort kept building.

She tried what she could find online. A device that held her arm in place at night helped a little with sleep. Red light therapy helped a little too. A weighted wand she swung around jerked her shoulder too much. In class, she could only demonstrate with a two-pound weight, and any attempt at five pounds left her hurting the next day badly.

Getting dressed became its own project. To put on a button-down jacket or blouse, she had to approach it as if she’d had a stroke, using the same techniques she teaches her patients. “It was a battle to move that arm,” she said, “and it was a battle to keep my spirits up.”

The Turning Point

Surgery was not something she wanted. A past operation had left her with mobility issues, and that was the last thing she needed for a mobility problem.

Then she came across a video from Dr. Joey. She read through testimonials and saw real people of all ages making progress, not just young athletes. That gave her hope. She also liked that the program had her doing something every day, which matched how she works with her own patients: set things up, then let the person lead.

The program’s online format suited her well. She lives about 20 minutes from town, and she knew she would never drive to a clinic every day. Instead, she trained at home or in her studio. She watched the exercise videos again and again to catch small details, and she liked that each one showed how to make it easier or harder.

Her exercises were written down, and if she skipped one, she had to explain why to her coach. She admits she sometimes swore at the screen in those first weeks, but she never held back her feedback.

Results

  • She can raise her arm and get into her coat without grunting or groaning
  • No longer needs stroke-style techniques to get dressed
  • Sleeping on her side no longer causes pain
  • Can now do push-ups
  • Her energy is back to where it used to be
  • Feels ready to teach another class and help more people

What Changed And Why It Worked

She describes the program as extremely methodical. Rather than only targeting the rotator cuff, it addressed the nervous system, the supporting muscles around the shoulder, and even the core. As an occupational therapist, that whole-body approach made sense to her.

Daily work also made a difference. She felt she got more one-on-one time than she would in a busy clinic, because her coach responded to her videos whenever she sent them.

What She’d Tell Someone Dealing With Shoulder Pain

She plans to share her story with a friend who is looking for the right program for shoulder pain after a shoulder replacement. Her advice is honest – you’ll have ups and downs. Sometimes you slip back a little before things click again, the same way any new skill comes together. But you can’t hide from showing up and putting in the work every day.

She didn’t expect much going in. She only wanted to lift her arm without a struggle. What she got back was her energy and her drive to help others. “You hate to see people suffering,” she said.
