How a 51-Year-Old Firefighter Beat Chronic Shoulder Pain And Now Does 4-Hour Surf Sessions

By Published On: October 20, 2026

Some people can work around a bad shoulder. A firefighter with almost 20 years on the job can’t. When you’re forcing entry into a burning building, swinging a sledgehammer, or pulling down a ceiling, your shoulders have to show up every single time. For this 51-year-old firefighter and lifelong surfer, they had stopped showing up.

Pushing Through Pain Made Things Worse

He had partially torn his labrum in an earlier accident, but like a lot of driven people, he didn’t slow down. He kept working out and kept pushing progressive overload, even through pain. “If you’re up there in your 50s, it’s kind of hard to maintain if you’re doing the same program with pain,” he said. The strain kept piling up, and his body never got the chance to recover.

By the time he reached out, shoulder pain was ruining his days and nights. He woke up every two to three hours, sometimes with pain shooting from his neck into his shoulders. He was struggling to surf. At work, he worried that one swing of a sledgehammer would be the end of his shoulder, and he didn’t want to keep calling in sick.

What He Did Before Us

He had tried almost everything. His first attempt at physical therapy for shoulder pain, through his shoulder specialist, felt like a conveyor belt: do this, do that, take home some homework, and book another appointment if you have a question. He saw a chiropractor every month, got massages, tried acupuncture, and turned his living room into a gym full of bands, foam rollers, lacrosse balls, and a massage gun. Some of it helped for a while, but two weeks later he’d be back at square one. For a man who can’t sit still, the pain had left him stuck on the couch.

The Turning Point

He found Comeback Performance on Instagram while he was in pain and searching for answers. A testimonial from a surf director with a story much like his convinced him to give it a try.

From the first meeting, he had a feeling it would work. He sent over his MRI and X-rays, and his plan was built around what they showed. “All you have to do is just create that recipe for me, and I just need to follow it,” he said.

The app was easy to use, and the weekly check-ins kept everything on track. When something didn’t feel right, he could reach out straight from his phone. There were ups and downs early on, but week by week, things started moving in the right direction.

Results

  • Sleep came back, and he calls it the number one change.
  • His surf sessions grew from a 45-minute max to an hour, then two, three, and most recently four hours.
  • He no longer dreads paddling out the next day after a long session.
  • He passed a recent fitness test with push-ups and planks and felt nothing afterward.
  • He now handles his own neck stretches and nerve glides during his hour-long drive and while waiting for waves.

What Changed And Why It Worked?

Past treatments gave him short-term relief that never lasted. This time, he had a plan built on his own scans, a coach he could reach anytime, and simple routines he could fit into everyday life. He doesn’t just do his exercises at home. He does them in the car and on his board between sets. His coach called him a “movement opportunist,” and that habit is a big reason his progress stuck.

Trust mattered too. He believed in the process, followed the steps, and put in the work.

What He’d Tell Someone With the Same Struggles

“You got to believe the program,” he said. “I’m 51 years old, and I got more to go.” For anyone dealing with neck pain shooting down the arm, sleepless nights, and a sore shoulder, his advice is simple: give it a try, and work at it.

Today, he sleeps through the night, surfs for hours, and heads into his shifts without wondering what tomorrow will bring.
